Cottonwood Glen at Kiowa Creek near Bennett, CO has one of the most peaceful ceremony spaces I’ve ever seen. Many elements of this beautiful outdoor event space resonate with me personally. And it would appear I’m not alone because the style team of today’s shoot also seems to have been inspired by this location and worked to bring the characteristic details of the ceremony glen into the reception space as well.
One of my favorite elements is the altar area which is dominated by a trio of large cathedral window panes. The metal gates leading to the wedding glen were designed to mirror the windows’ shape and visually bookend the aisle. Appropriately, this striking feature is incorporated into the gate-fold invitations. The stylized window motif features a view of the namesake cottonwood trees that create a private sanctuary for weddings in the meadow. Certainly the most jaw-dropping use of the tree motif is to be found on that incredible cake. Everything from the way it was stacked with a single side aligned to the custom cake stand blew me away. The plate that the cake sat on was laser cut in one piece and then the tree portion was bent upward to be perpendicular to the rest! The 3-D effect it creates with the rose gold trees on the cake is inspired! That same rose gold appears on the inside of the invitation suite envelopes and subtly into the color scheme of the floral arrangements. The venue was at first designed as a members-only shooting club. The team includes nods to that legacy with the quail feathers and shotgun shell boutonniere holder. Finally, rustic elements like the unusual bark flower trough and floral choices highlight the meadow of the ceremony space again.
In keeping with the shoot’s soft prairie feeling, the breathtaking bride wore a cotton gown from a company who works only in natural fibers. The airy ensemble creates a subtle backdrop for bold makeup and the piercing light eyes of the model. A loose braid and flowers keep the boho feeling going while a sparkling headband reminds us that it’s still an upscale affair. Injections of bold burgundy in the centerpieces, bouquet, and hairpiece do a great job of highlighting the saturated lips of the bride. Using color, texture, and sheen; the team did an amazing job of making your eyes fall on all the right details. As the sun went down on the shoot, candlelight and moody shadows actually enhanced many of these features. Great job folks!
